The business case for SCTA

The fundamental purpose of SCTA is to identify areas in the procedure that are susceptible to human failure and could result in a major accident, and strengthen the controls in place to mitigate the risks.

Completing SCTA is an effective way of focusing on the prevention of major accidents and fulfilling the necessary expectations of the regulator.

Whilst SCTA is not in itself a risk assessment, it is a vital part of any subsequent ALARP demonstration.

In addition to the obvious safety benefits, one of the overlooked benefits is the improvement in business performance and efficiency.

The SCTA process

The figure below illustrates the SCTA process that IHF follows and advocates. Underlying this approach is our belief in keeping the process as straight-forward and impactful as possible. The purpose of the IHF SCTA tool is to provide our clients with everything they need to complete and manage the SCTA process whilst minimising the need for additional ‘expert’ support.
